Bible Note: It's been a real long time since I studied any of this stuff so I'll just comment in "large brush strokes. The "Cult of Mary" or Cultus Mariologist (forgive my Latin) can be traced back to about the third century where the Church had to decide weather or not she was the "Mother of God" or just the "Mother of Christ." The latter being a concept that would devide the body of Christ as one half part true man and another half part true God. The decision was that she was the Mother of God, not as an expression of God needing a mother, but rather expressing that Jesus is both, at the same time, truly human and truly devine. There always seems to be some record of this cult developing their doctrines over the next 1600 years. It grew and grew finally gaining acceptance. Those of us Catholics that considered it to be a harmless fringe decoration of the main Truths of the Faith, were sorely disappointed when it became an official doctrine of the Church. Many jumped ship and became Lutherans, etc. Others, like my dad and grandparents, accepted the doctrine and stayed for the sake of unity, and respect for the Church's teaching authority. So it may come as a surprise that first, not all Catholics were happy to see it coming, and secondly, it has only been an official teaching of the Church for a very short while. I think about it like an ear that has been itching to be scratched for 1600 years. |
