Bible Note: Hello, Candy Lee - You have a sweet name :-) Please allow an old man to indulge in the pleasure of reminiscence about memorizing Scripture. A long time ago when I was a young boy it was my good fortune --though I did not view it so at the time -- to have had two or three Sunday school teachers who were high on memorizing Scripture. They put the names of the students on a big poster on the wall of the classroom and affixed a gold star beside the names of those who learned by heart the "golden text" each week. It grew to be quite a thing to be sought after to earn another gold star each week. As a consequence, my mind being young and my memory retentive, in course of time I managed to "hide in my heart" (Ps. 119:11) a surprisingly large number of scriptural passages. Even though I, at the time, had at best a pale understanding of most of them, these passages have stuck in my mind all these years, and as I have matured spiritually my understanding of them has deepened; thus, I have benefited enormously from this arduous work of memorization that I undertook long ago chiefly to earn gold stars. The gold stars have passed away but His word hidden in my heart will never pass away. I suspect that if one set for himself the criterion that a passage of Scripture must be thoroughly understood before being memorized, he wouldn't memorize much of Scripture. --Hank |
