Subject: Explain Mark 4 parables? |
Bible Note: Storyword - Thank you kindly for your gracious words and prompt response. All too frequently questions are posed, answers are given, but one never hears another word of thanks or anything else from the questioner. They must think we are an eleemosynary society of 21st century venerable bedes cloisted in a remote village in Tibet who have managed to transcend the human need for a kind expression of appreciation of our efforts! :-) ...... Please forgive my oversight in not noting that your question was your first post and in being derelict in extending to you a cordial welcome to StudyBibleForum. Welcome! ..... As a post script on parables, it is worth noting that whole books have been devoted to parables, not only to Jesus' parables but to parables of the Old Testament. I recall still the look of incredulity that some students in a Sunday school class gave me when I mentioned something about the parables of the Old Testament. If you'd like to pursue the study of parables, one good resource is Herbert Lockyer's "All the Parables of the Bible." It's still in print, widely available, and can be had in a paperback edition for 10 or 12 dollars. I saw one listed at Amazon.com for "eleven something." ....... The question of the purpose of Christ's parables came up on this Forum some time ago and someone answered that it was to obscure the truth. That is true, of course, but only in a very limited sense and in a limited number of instances. By and large, Christ told parables to make the truth more engaging and clear, not to obscure it, to those who were willing to hear. But on occasion He did use parables to make the truth obscure to those who lacked spiritual sensitivity. Jesus explains this in Mark 4:11,12. --Hank |
