Bible Question: In Luke 12 verse 10 the bible states that anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. What does that mean could someone please give me an example of what is considered blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Thank you. |
Bible Answer: Hi, iamreedmd! In order to understands Jesus' proclamation in reference to the Holy Spirit we must understand what transpired before the statment: Prior to Mark 3:20-30, Jesus had been preaching, healing and feeding the masses that gathered about Him. He had become so prominent that the religious elite began to send emissaries (more like spies) to test His knowledge and authority. During this particular occasion the scribes (teachers of the Law) claimed that Jesus was acting with the power of Beelzebul (some top ranking demon); yet since Christ Jesus came in the power and knowledge of the Holy Spirit, He cautioned them not to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit is the force (power) of God that reveals God's Word (Law/Commandments) to His people--by rejecting the Holy Spirit the people of God had no way of knowing Jesus. And since there is no other name given to man by which all can obtain salvation (Acts 4:10-12), if we do not come to Jesus how can we gain salvation?: Rejecting the Holy Spirit means rejecting Christ: Rejecting Christ means rejecting God: Rejecting God means rejecting salvation!
