NASB | Mark 2:22 "No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Mark 2:22 "No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the [fermenting] wine will [expand and] burst the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the wineskins. But new wine must be put into new wineskins." |
Bible Question: What does this mean? |
Bible Answer: Wineskins were made from animal tissue. Fresh wineskins had the ability to stretch, but old wineskins had been stretched and could stretch no further. New wine is still undergoing the fermenting process which causes an increase of pressure in the wineskin requiring it to stretch. So, if you put new wine into old wineskin that was already stretched to it's max, the old wineskin would rupture and spill all the new wine. As BradK pointed out, this has to do with Jesus being questioned about fasting. MK 2:19 And Jesus said to them, “While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. MK 2:20 “But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. MK 2:21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. MK 2:22 “No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.” The people listening to Jesus speak would have known how 'silly' it was to place new wine into old winesacks. Jesus was able to explain why His discicples weren't fasting because He was there with them. Here is a quote from the Asbury Commentary: "Since fasting was a symbol for true piety and proper regard for the coming kingdom, some were concerned that Jesus' disciples did not observe fasts. For Jesus, the kingdom was already breaking in; hence, it was not time to mourn over its delay but to celebrate its arrival. The following brief parables highlight how inappropriate old beliefs and practices were in the context of this new reality. Jesus' words about the wedding feast contain a surprising twist. In noting the departure of the bridegroom, he predicts his own death. This is the first clear anticipation of the Cross, which broods over the whole gospel." |
