Bible Question: What is your view on fasting? Have you ever fasted? What does it do for a Christian? |
Bible Answer: Fasting in Mark 2:20 suggests a type of mourning. Most religions promote some type of fasting to prove their devotion to God. The religious Jews used it as a means of impressing people with their piety. (Matt. 6:16) We are called to fast so that we may focus on God and what Christ has done for us. In denying our physical needs our minds are fixed more clearly on God. It should never be seen as an attempt to impress others or manipulate God. It is for the benefit of drawing closer to our Savior. |
