AMPLIFIED 2015 | Mark 2:14 As He was passing by, He saw Levi (Matthew) the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax collector's booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk]." And he got up and followed Him [becoming His disciple, believing and trusting in Him and following His example]. [Matt 9:9-17; Luke 5:27-39] |
Bible Question: Were tax collectors Jewish or were they Roman as well? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Songbirdca! The Roman Empire, as well as all before and after, used their conquered territories to their fullest yield... this would include using some of the people they'd conquered as mediums to both control and appease the masses... using Jews to collect taxes from the Jews was simply an extension of their practice. The Jewish tax collector was deemed as the worst of the worst by the people of Israel because they were seen as vultures who would raid the carcases that the Romans produced. Though not having political or military power, these tax collectors were as powerful as the IRS agents: one signature and the recipient is divested of house and livelihood--at times, in the Empire, even of life itself!
