Bible Question:
This passage has been treated as a commendation or praise that Jesus made about the selfless offering and total dependent on the provision of God by the poor widow. However, from the context starting from Ch 11 v12 to Ch 13 v1, Jesus has been rebuking the religious leaders. The preceding verse (v40) of 12:43 and v1 in Ch 13 appear to be a strong background for Jesus' remark of Ch 12:43 expressing the extreme level of pressure that the religous leaders posed on the poor. Therefore, could the focus of the commendation be more of a rebuke of the religious leaders instead? Shalom Azure |
Bible Answer: Greetings Sister! The immediate context would indicate He is teaching His disciples. "Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them..." v43 The comparison was of the "people" of which "many" were rich etc... v41. I don't think the view here was the religious leaders but rather all the people who put money into the treasury. Steve |
