Bible Question (short): Old and New test. definitions of sin |
Question (full): I'm trying to understand biblical definitions of sin, and in particular am having problems with reconciling the old and new testament definitions of sin? It seems to me that the clearest reference point of sin must be the ten commandments. However, when the rich man asks Jesus how he must live, and Jesus replies, "You know the commandments", he only quotes 5 of the 10 - why? In addition, I feel myself floundering with the Matthew's account of the Sermon on the Mount; am I right in saying Jesus precedes his advice by effectively saying, "Do not reject one word of the law you know" - that is, the Ten Commandments, but then seems to give advice on how to interpret the commandments that contradicts this? In addition, are there any other relevant definitions and explanations of sin from the bible that would be useful? Thanks to all in advance |
