NASB | Mark 1:34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Mark 1:34 And Jesus healed many who were suffering with various diseases; and He drove out many demons, but would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him [recognizing Him as the Son of God]. |
Bible Question: When reading in Mark I found it interesting that Jesus told the demons not to tell who He was. Did the people who were there not hear them saying He was the Son of God? What am I missing? Why would He not want them to tell anyone who He is? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Mike... Welcome to the forum! The Lord Jesus Christ didn't need the testimony of demons to affirm His identity. In Jewish circles we affirm the the correctness and veracity of a statement with the word amen (i.e., it is trustworthy). This is always done after hearing the statement. Christ never needed others to confirm His words. Often before He began speaking, He Himself would confirm His own words (Hebrews 6:13) by saying, amen and amen (John 1:17; Hebrews 1:1-2).
