NASB | Mark 1:34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Mark 1:34 And Jesus healed many who were suffering with various diseases; and He drove out many demons, but would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him [recognizing Him as the Son of God]. |
Bible Question:
Why didn't Jesus let the demons speak, confess who He was? Didn't He want the world to know who He was? Was Jesus on a secret mission? Steve |
Bible Answer: The most probable cause for Jesus not permitting the demons to speak was simply that He did not want their testimony to be twisted into charges by His critics that He was connected with the demoniac realm of Satan and his minions. Even so, the Pharisees in Matthew 12 ascribed to Beelzebul Jesus' power to cast our demons, leading to Jesus' discourse about the unpardonable sin........ No where is it suggested that Jesus was on some sort of secret mission. We think of spies or uncover agents when we think of secret missions. Jesus was neither of those. Old Testament prophecies, the announcement of His birth, the proclamation of John the Baptist -- all these said loudly and clearly not only who Jesus was, but what His mission was as well. --Hank |
