NASB | Mark 1:12 ¶ Immediately the Spirit *impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Mark 1:12 ¶ Immediately the [Holy] Spirit forced Him out into the wilderness. |
Bible Question: The NASB uses the word "impelled" in Mark 1:12. The NASB concordance claims that the word "ekbaino" is used here, not the word "exballo". Strong does not have the word ekbaino at all. I have not found a Greek text that uses this word either. How did the translators choose this word? |
Bible Answer: Hi, stepmor... Welcome to the forum! That was a very good question. None of us in the forum can speak with any authority concerning the NASB translators' decisions. Sometimes I've gleened something useful from checking out the NET Bible. I was surprised to find this word in Mark 1:12 (with variations of "to be driven" in the TYN, GNV, KJV, ASV, LITV -- "impelled" as you pointed out in the NASB -- "put forth" in the YLT, WYC) was used 76 times in the New Testament. Sometimes it is helpful to see how a word is used in other contexts. In this case, it was very informative indeed.
