AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 9:14 ¶ Then the disciples of John [the Baptist] came to Jesus, asking, "Why do we and the Pharisees often fast [as a religious exercise], but Your disciples do not fast?" |
Bible Question: Why didn't the disciples fast? He said *when* you fast (6:16-18), so does these verses line up? |
Bible Answer: Matthew 9:15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. The question was asked, "Why didn't the disciples fast?" Perhaps a better question might be: When *did* or when *will* the disciples fast? The answer is in the very next verse (after Matthew 9:14). In 9:15 Jesus says, "the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast." |
