NASB | Matthew 6:5 ¶ "When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 6:5 ¶ "Also, when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray [publicly] standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets so that they may be seen by men. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, they [already] have their reward in full. |
Bible Question: Does it matter in church if you pray at the pew or at the alter? my Mother-in-law and husband says its better to pray at the altar during praise and worship. I never was to a church where alot of people bow on the stairs during praise and worship. The church is pentecostal. |
Bible Answer: Nanner - The Gospel writers tell of Jesus' going into the wilderness to pray. In Matthew 6 Jesus warns against the hypocritical practice of praying standing in the synagogues and street corners to be seen of men. He teaches instead to pray in the privacy of one's room. But Jesus is not condemning the practice of public prayer but the misuse of it, for He follows up in Matthew 6 with His famous "Pater Noster" (Our Father) model prayer for His disciples which, by the use of plural pronouns (OUR Father, give US, etc.) is clearly adapted to corporate prayer. ..... From this segment of Matthew wherein Jesus teaches about prayer and from other passages of Scripture on the subject of prayer, I don't think an inference can be drawn that it is better to pray at the altar than at the pew. The content of the prayer and the spirit in which it is offered to God seem of far more importance than the location at which it is prayed. --Hank |
