Bible Answer: Greetings Patrick19, Welcome to StudyBibleForum.com! You asked why the phrase 'for yours is the kingdom' omitted from Matthew 6:13 in some Bible versions. Matthew 6:13: "'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]'" (NASB has it in italics) "And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen." (NKJV retains it) "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." (ESV omits completely) The NET Bible (http://net.bible.org/bible.php) has some excellent textual notes that explain some of the presumed 'discrepancies' between translations, and here it simply says that most manuscripts read "for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, amen" here. The reading without this sentence, though, is attested by generally better witnesses. The phrase was probably composed for the liturgy of the early church and most likely was based on 1 Chr 29:11-13; a scribe probably added the phrase at this point in the text for use in public scripture reading.. Both external and internal evidence argue for the shorter reading. (paraphrased with some liberties from http://net.bible.org/bible.php) Therefore, since the evidence points to the shorter rendering as being the more 'original' rendering, then that is why you generally see the shorter rendering in most of the Bible translations of today. Blessings to you, Makarios |
