Bible Question: Hello Brothers and Sisters. I have a question: When Jesus said that "Blessed are the peacemakers" in Matt 5:9, what does He mean? The reason why I ask this is because He says later in Matthews 10 that He didn't come to bring peace but a sword. If we are children of God, we are to follow His leadership, right? Could anybody help me with this? Your answers are greatly appreciated |
Bible Answer: Hello DScott, The Amplified version reads: Blessed (enjoying enviable happiness, spiritually prosperous--with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they shall be called the sons of God! John Gill says of this passage, "Blessed are the peace makers Not between God and man, for no man can make his own peace with God; nor can any mere creature, angels, or men, make it for him; Christ, in this sense, is the only peace maker (Eph. 2:14): but between men and men; and such are they, who are of peaceable dispositions themselves; live peaceably with all men, and with one another, as their relation obliges to, and their mutual comfort requires; and with the men of the world; and who are ready, willing, and very serviceable, in composing differences, and making peace between their fellow creatures and fellow Christians." I hope this helps, BradK |
