Bible Question:  In Mathew 5:5 Can you help me to explain this verse.Thnks

Bible Answer:  Hi, DC...

Have you ever seen the movie "First Blood" with Sylvester Stallone as Rambo? Remember, early in the movie, when he was being beaten by those corrupt, small-town officials? Remember how -- at least for a time -- he just submitted to their abuse, without retaliation? The Rambo character could have wiped the floor with those fellows right from the start. Although he had that power, he mercifully, chose to withheld its use. At that point in the story, Rambo was exemplifying meekness. :-)

Weird example, perhaps, but I think it is one that helps us understand and remember what it means to be meek. It is having power, but under restraint. Certainly we understand that kind of meekness in our Lord Jesus (Matthew 26:52-54).

Paul speaks of meekness as well. See Titus 3:1-7 -- the word meekness used in verse 2. Note that we can show meekness, for we sympathize with the lost; for we were once just like them (v3). But while we were deserving of destruction and damnation, God saved us (vv4-5). How much easy it is to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44) -- acting meekly, gently, mercifully, and graciously toward them -- when we realize how God did precisely that for us!

In Him, Doc
