Bible Question: Is it wrong to swear or take an oath, as in a court of law or as when assuming a public office? |
Bible Answer: In both of these cases, you are agreeing to do what is right. When you are sworn into court, you swear to tell the truth, which is in agreement with Col 3:9 and James 3:14. When you are sworn into public office, you swear to uphold the laws which are in place to protect and defend your people, which is in agreement with 1 Peter 2:13-17. Publicly affirming that you will do your best to do what God has commanded us to do in scripture is not in conflict with Matthew 5:34. On the contrary, swearing by something that is not under your control (verses 34 and 35), or swearing to do what you are unable to do (see verses 36 and 37) is. |
