Bible Question: Is it wrong to swear or take an oath, as in a court of law or as when assuming a public office? |
Bible Answer: Hank:-)I see al the notes using James 5:12 as the basis for not swearing or taking an oath. Some times life throughs a curve ball. When I went to work for NASA, we had to swear our alegance, and to keep what we were working on to remain totally a secrect. Afirming instead of swearing was not permitted. To this day, that is the policy of many projects. Those who pass the background test, they do invade your life as well as your wives, parents and friends. I am reminded Jesus said to render to Ceaser what was Ceasers, and to submit to those in authority. Under such circumstances I believe this is different than the verse is saying. When we are responsible for others life, I want to know I can count on that persons truthfullness. We all can remmember how Presidents have lied and covered up evil deeds. Every President said they would be truthful so help them God. In recent years one President did not know what fornication was! (I think he was from Arkansas) We have bowed our head in shame and pain at some ministers who have fallen as well. The sinfull nature of man is a battle for us all. I beleive that is why scripture says not many of us should be teachers. There is serious consequences for failing to keep out vows, oaths, and what we swear to! My opinion is if a Christian is not faithful in the covenant of marriage, then they are untrustworthy in all areas. This can change, but change and earning trust takes a lot of time to regain. I earned my countries trust, I gave my Holy word, I kept my word. I believe it is entirely possible to make a vow, oath, or swear to a commitment and be so anchored to the Word of Truth and to the Lord Jesus that our word is sealed in such a way that it is as if Christ signed it Himself. When we make this kind of covenant it must be solid and pure as gold. I do not take giving my word lightly! When we say "oh I will remember to pray for you" that is our word, is it not? But in reality I often think it is an empty promise. Therefore I would say don't swear unless you are prepared do anything to honor you oath, or swearing in a statement. By the way Hank, I do have a short haired big Colley,(120 lbs worth) which is shaggy, but not long haired. I just thought of one other delema, what about all these men going into the US Service? They are required to sware aligence, not affirm. That's if I remember correctly. By the way I changed my ending to "chairo" it means farewell, God-speed, greeting, hail, joy, rejoice. I want an ending no one else is using. So this may turn out to be a long list of Greek words. That's if I have to keep changing my ending. chairo, justme |
