AMPLIFIED 2015 Matthew 5:3 ¶ "Blessed [spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired] are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant], for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]. [Luke 6:20-23]

Bible Question:  In Mathew 5:3 What does the meaning of the word theirs is in this verse?

Bible Answer:  Dcmartin :: The antecedent of "theirs" in Matthew 5:3 is "the poor in spirit." In other words, "theirs" refers to "the poor in spirit." In this verse, as with all the other Beatitudes in this segment from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "blessed" means "happy." And to be among those whom Jesus calls "the poor in spirit" is to be the very opposite of those who have a proud and haughty spirit. The redeemed of God have been humbled by His grace, have acknowledged their sin, have surrended their lives to the Sovereign Lord on whom they solely depend to save them. The verse concludes with the words "for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." As used here, it is a general designation of the ultimate abode of the regenerate believers in Christ, the dwelling place of the saved, the eternal home of the redeemed in Christ. (Cf. Luke 6:20-23). --Hank
