Bible Question:
I have a question regarding Matthew 5:25; Who is the adversary, who is the judge and who is the officer? What prison is this speaking of? I have asked a lot of people, but I have never been given a clear answer. |
Bible Answer: Word Study ... Antidikos . Krites . Huperetes ........ One key to understanding what the words mean is to look at the orginial. Never forget to look at the context (vv 24-25). The word for enemy is a legal term antidikos (an opponent in a suit of law; an adversary, enemy). Also seen in Luke 12:58 (Luke's version of this), 18:3 ... as well as 1 Peter 5:8, talking about the devil. It is not the same word used in loving your enemy. ... You owe someone money Krites is the word for judge ... It means one who passes or arrogates to himself, judgment on anything. It could be an arbiter or a Roman procurator administering justice. ... He takes you to court - his legal right Huperetes is the word for officer and means servant. Luke uses praktor (one who does anything, a doer; one who does the work of inflicting punishment or taking vengeance). ... in this case he carries out the order of the judge. This is a legal process ... they used to have debtor's prison for cases like this. The person you owed money to, had a choice ... so it would behoove you to make friends with him.
