Bible Note: What were they watching for, those shepherds? Sheep! Did their occupation give them more legitimacy than the Rabbis in their homes or maybe the guileless Natanyahu whom Mashiach commended as a true Israali? Was the right place for this encounter in the fields or in the Bais haMikdosh Temple concider the healing which took place in the pool vis a vis the Temple. But if proper place was not in the Bais haMikdosh, then why? Maybe if I saw a brightlight in the field overhead or in the Bais haMikdosh our even in my own home I would be alert too... maybe. but I guess you are right that if a group of Angels began singing in the dark around me, I too would be awe struck aand inclined to see a greater significance even if I was not so righteous, No? Yet many of the shepherds kept the sheep flocks for the Temple officials.. these were those sheep used for sacrifices, sold within the proximity of the bais haMikdosh... sold at a profit. haMashiach was very irrate with these marketeers and actually scattered the vendors, shepherds and sheep.
