Bible Note: As to why Paul was taking these men to the Temple to make "an offering" (NKJV), see verse 24. "*pay their expenses.*" The expenses were "for the temple ceremony in which the 4 would shave their heads, and the sacrifices associated with the Nazirite vow. Paying those expenses for another was considerered an act of piety, and by so doing, Paul would give further proof that he had not forsaken his Jewish heritage" (page 1674, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). Acts 21:28-29. "*brought Greeks into the temple.* The Asian Jews accused Paul of having brought Trophimus past the Court of the Gentiles into the part of the temple which Gentiles were forbidden. Such a charge was absurd, for it would have entailed Paul's risking his friend's life (the Romans had granted the Jews permission to execute any Gentile who so defiled the temple)" (page 1675, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). |
