Bible Question: In our precept study we went back and forth on this issue: Did Satan tempt Jesus DURING the forty days or did he wait for the forty day period to end and then tempt him? Is it that we are just reading too much into the words used, are we dividing the word of God? It is just hard to imagine that Satan just did nothing for 40 days. I heard many different scriptures quoted today that can back up both sides, including a comment that there were many temptations but the bible only mentions the most mentionable....?? |
Bible Answer: Welcome to the forum mylene. Thank you for your input. It is important to read what the Bible says. Matthew 4:3 does not say "then the tempter came" ... so he could of been tempted the forty days and forty nights as Mark 1:13 and Luke 4:2 clearly state. The conversation probably took place after the forty days and forty nights, based on Luke 4:3. Luke 4:13 says the devil was not finish tempting Jesus. Here is the Bible about His temptation: Matt 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Matt 4:2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. Matt 4:3 And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." Mark 1:12 Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. Mark 1:13 And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him. Luke 4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness Luke 4:2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry. Luke 4:3 And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." Matt 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Matt 4:2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. Matt 4:3 And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." Mark 1:12 Immediately the Spirit *impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. Luke 4:3 And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." I think it is clear that He was tempted the whole time and the talk about the bread and all was at the end. Searcher |
