Subject: What does water baptism do? |
Bible Note: 1 Cor 15:29 Paul use the word "they" and not "we" so if the reference was to ,"If Jesus was not resurrected", he would include himself, because as he stated in the beginning of the chapter, that he "delivered unto them first of all that which I also received" therefore they were being baptized for other people who have passed on. 6) What does Paul refer to when he speaks of "baptism for the dead"? (29) - Of the many different explanations that have been offered, the one making most sense to me is that Paul is speaking of the inconsistency of those who deny the resurrection while at the same time practicing a form of "vicarious baptism". Notice that Paul refers to "they" who were doing this, not "we" (i.e., the apostles). Paul in this passage is neither openly condemning or justifying the practice. He simply uses the practice of others to demonstrate the inconsistency of such practice when denying the resurrection of the dead. Whether we should practice such a rite as "baptism for the dead" today must be determined from passages elsewhere. All we find elsewhere concerning baptism is that it requires faith and repentance of the one being baptized. This would preclude the practice of "vicarious baptism." "In reference to Romans 6:3-4, baptism is symbolic of our burial and resurrection with Christ. It is not the water, or even the act, that brings about "newness of life". As it says in I Corinthians 15:45,"So also it is written, 'The first man, Adam, became a living soul.' The last Adam became a life-giving spirit." It is the Holy Spirit quickens us, bringing us out of the grave we were in". In your above statement, what grave are you refering too? You stated, "that it's not the water, but John 3:5 says we must be born of the water and the spirit to enter the kingdom of God. So sense Jesus made referance to the water, and the spirit, something must be there, and it's there because he said so! When we look at Romans 6:3-5 we must notice the power in being baptized for the remission of our sins. Philppians 3:10-11 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his suffering, being made conformable unto his death: 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. This is what makes baptism in the name of Jesus so Powerful, He said, "the WORDS THAT I SPEAK UNTO YOU, THEY ARE SPIRIT, AND THEY ARE LIFE". This is why when Jesus spoke Mark 16:16 This is our SALVATION! 1John 5:1-4, that you brought into light, dont leave out vs.5,6,8 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he that came by WATER and BLOOD, even Jesus Christ; not by WATER ONLY, BUT BY WATER, AND BLOOD. AND IT IS THE SPIRIT THAT BEARETH WITHNESS, BECAUSE THE SPIRIT IS TRUTH. 8 AND THERE ARE THREE THAT BEAR WITHNESS IN EARTH, THE SPIRIT,AND THE WATER, AND THE BLOOD: AND THESE THREE AGREE IN ONE. |
