AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 3:11 ¶ "As for me, I baptize you with water because of [your] repentance [that is, because you are willing to change your inner self--your old way of thinking, regret your sin and live a changed life], but He (the Messiah) who is coming after me is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove [even as His slave]; He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire (judgment). Bible Note: Dear Ed, Yes, I expected when you continued to ask the question predicated as you do, that any answer that I would give would be unsatisfying to you. Sola scriptura is fundamentally popositional; it is a doctrine which will always distinguish between that which is descriptive and that which is prescriptive. In faithfulness to the Lord (Deuteronomy 4:24), I will not be able to give you the answer that you want, especially in the way you want to arrive at it. You asked what Gordon Fee would say. I can only quote what he has actually said on a similar topic: "At issue, as I perceive it, is whether historical precedent may serve in a normative way for the establishing of Christian doctrine. I have expressed concern on this issue... [concerning this] 'considerable criticism' has been levied against my articulation of things. But I must confess that in all of that criticism, I have failed to find a hermeneutical articulation that took me by the hand and showed me how one goes about doing this -- that is, establishing something normative on the basis of historical precedent alone."
