AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 3:11 ¶ "As for me, I baptize you with water because of [your] repentance [that is, because you are willing to change your inner self--your old way of thinking, regret your sin and live a changed life], but He (the Messiah) who is coming after me is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove [even as His slave]; He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire (judgment). Bible Note: Hi, Ed... It is still building something normative entirely from narrative. Consequently I do not find it persuasive. What the apostles did is very interesting, but the foundation of our faith is on what they taught (Ephesians 2:20). Even Peter tells us that his experience only served to affirm the "more sure" word of the Scriptures (2 Peter 1:17-19). Sir, I do not wish to disturb the teachings that you hold; nor do I want to debate them (which would be contrary to the wishes of our gracious host, the Lockman Foundation, as spelled out in the Terms of Use). Simultaneously, I am encouraged when people look to the Scriptures, rather than feelings or experiences, to build belief. Consequently -- and this with every intention for your good and God's glory -- I encourage you to build up your doctrinal foundations from didactic passages. That will then illuminate the narrative. You could end up with the same conclusions; but getting there the right way is just as important. In Him, Doc |
