AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 3:11 ¶ "As for me, I baptize you with water because of [your] repentance [that is, because you are willing to change your inner self--your old way of thinking, regret your sin and live a changed life], but He (the Messiah) who is coming after me is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove [even as His slave]; He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire (judgment). Bible Note: Hi, Ed O... As you know, there are many narratives in the Scriptures. However, just because something happens in narrative certainly does not mean that that thing is normative for everyone. None of us would try to be healed by dipping seven times in the Jordon, or make a shortcut by walking on water, or go fishing in order to pay our taxes, etc. Narrative does not serve that purpose. If Pentecost was normative for all Christians, what does that make of Christ's specific references to it? More problematic than that is Peter's explanation of it as the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy. Etc. If you would like to read a good discussion of the question, with sound admonitions on proper exegesis of Scripture, and, by the way, a Pentecostal elder to boot, I would highly recommend Gordon D. Fee's book "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth." You can get it from Amazon for under ten bucks. By the way, if we are numbering blessings, I would prefer (1) election, (2) predestination, (3) gospel call, (4) inward call, (5) regeneration, (6) conversion, (7) justification, (8) sanctification, and (9) glorification. And, yes, every one of the redeemed does and will seek those. But better yet, they are promised! Talk about blessings! In Him, Doc |
