NASB | Matthew 3:11 ¶ "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 3:11 ¶ "As for me, I baptize you with water because of [your] repentance [that is, because you are willing to change your inner self--your old way of thinking, regret your sin and live a changed life], but He (the Messiah) who is coming after me is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove [even as His slave]; He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire (judgment). [Luke 3:16] |
Bible Question: I had a dream that the earth was being baptized in holy fire. What is the full context of holy fire. I know that no wickedness will with stand it but is there scripture to back-up the earth being baptized in Holy Spirit and fire. |
Bible Answer: Hi, Jason... I believe the phrase "holy fire" you are using must be connected with John the Baptist's statement (see also Luke 3:16). Generally fire means judgment or wrath. (cf See Isaiah 5:24; 61:2,24) However, it can also be symbolic of purification (see Isa 6; Malachi 3:2). I rather like Albert Barnes comment on this verse, "It is difficult to ascertain the precise meaning further than that his ministry would be very trying, purifying, searching. Multitudes would be converted; and those who were not true penitents would not be able to abide the trial, and would be driven away." In Him, Doc |
