Bible Question: i am not very educated in the bible, i go to church, and im a christian, i just dont understand a whole lot about the bible, and i hear soo much from several types of people on what they beleive, but my question is on baptism, my church baptises thefather, the son, and the holy spirit, which to me refers to jesus, but... my sis n law, who is pentacostal, she says you have to be baptised in jesus name. that the others are just titles. i have looked this up some, but i dont really know where to look in the bible. i have found many places on baptism, but one will say one way, and another ,another way. can somebody enlighten me on this subject, and help me to become not so bible eliterit? |
Bible Answer: I suggest that you read about the ethiopian treasurer in Acts 9:22-40. I truely believe that baptism is a step of faith not a way of being saved. My mother is also pentecostal and she told me if I did not receive the holy spirit at baptism I was attending the wrong church. I feel we each have a personal relationship with God that transends the views of man. So even if the ethiopian treasurer received the holy spirit it does not mean that this is what we should all strive for in baptism. The most important part of the story being told here is that it is christ dying on the cross that gives us eternal life. We do not get to heaven by being baptized. There is only one way we can get to heaven and that is through the blood of Jesus. We must admit we have sinned, we must understand that christ died on the cross for our sins was buried and rose again on the thrid day and was seen, and we must choose to have Jesus live inside of us forever. John 3:16 For God so loved the world... Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God 1 corinthians 15:3,4 christ died on the cross for our sins according to the scriptures he was buried and rose again on the third day according to the scriptures Hebrews 9:22 With out the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin John 1:12 But to those who received him to them he gave the right to become children of God. This is the most important part of becoming a christian. Baptism is part of christian growth. We baptize to show that we realize that we would not be able to communicate with God because we are separated not only physically but spiritually from God by our sin. God is perfect. He can not be around sin. We are all sinners. He loves us though and so he provided a way that our sins could be forgiven. It is through christ and the cross it is that simple. When we are baptized we are remembering symbolically that we are reunited with God the father through the cleansing blood of christ who washed us clean of sin when he died for us allowing us to be reunited again with God the father through his son Jesus and to have the holy spirit teach us and help us to grow in our faith as we read the bible, go to church, tell others about christ, pray, and last but not least spend time talking with God each day. I hope you will read your bible and come to your own conclusion about baptism. I know that we as a church should not ridicule eachother for our doctrinal beliefs. Remember most of all that your relationship with God is a personal one and he is the only one who you are accountable to ,Not to the beliefs of men. Conlan4k |
