AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 27:11 ¶ Now Jesus stood before [Pilate] the governor, and the governor asked Him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" [In affirmation] Jesus said to him, "It is as you say." [Mark 15:2-5; Luke 23:2, 3; John 18:29-37] |
Subject: Was JESUS a king? |
Bible Note: Hi Benjamite, Thank you for the Scripture references. But let me look at them with you, especially later, about the inscription on the cross. In John 18:33 Pilate asked Him whether He was the King [sic[ of the Jews. Jesus asked him therefore if he was saying that on his own or had someone told him that. Someone like Nathanael for instance with a wonderful declaration; John 1:49, Nathanael answered Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel." Mark 15:2, "And Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And answering He said to him, "[It is as] you say." And the chief priest began to accuse Him harshly." Whether Pilate knew Him as a King here we do not know; the chief priests thought that they were accusing a man of many things, but as you have said benjamite, He still is King; no matter who says that he is just a man. The translations that capitalize Deity are aware of the problems of how people regard Him, but we need to keep in mind that we know that He is a righteous Man, the King of kings and Lord of lords. Mark 15:9,10, "And Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" For he was aware that the chief priest had delivered Him up because of envy." The chief priest were just men and this Man came only in the likeness of men. They were envious and wanted to be like God. Luke 23:3, "And Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And He answered him and said, "[It is as] you say." And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no guilt in this man." [Man in the NKJ] I go with the NKJ for Man in Luke 23:4,6. The righteousness of this Man that Pilate's wife saw and the inscription on the cross show to my mind that Pilate recognized this Man as the Truth. The Romans convicted Him of being a king, you say, but Jesus prayed on the cross, "Forgive them for they know not what they do." Pilate, however, knew what he was doing. As far as the inscription on the cross is concerned, Matthew 27:37 has it in ALL CAPS and leaves it up to the viewer to decide whether King is meant to be capitalized. But Pilate says in John 19:5, "Behold the Man!" Also in verse 22, "Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written." What he had written was "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE (KING) OF THE JEWS". Parenthesis mine. He would not agree to the disclaimer that the chief priest wanted to include on the inscription, "He said..." John 19:21, NKJ, "Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, "I am the King of the Jews."'" End of quote. John 18:37, NASB, "Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" (Jesus) answered, "Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?" Jesus went on and told him that God's kingdom was not from here. John 18:37, "Pilate therefore said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say [correctly] that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the *Truth. Everyone who is of the *Truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, "What is Truth?" Pilate heard the truth as seen in John 19:7,..."He made Himself out to be the Son of God." And he was all the more afraid. So if he knew Christ as King and still allowed Him to be crucified, he would have much of which to be afraid. Hebrews 10:26, "For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,..." Hebrews 10:29, "How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the (Spirit) of grace?"
