Bible Question:
We know that God invented the institution of marriage. Historically, were the jews the first to perform marriages and marry? Were there earlier cultures or cultures outside Judaic influence marrying? Do we have evidence of this? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Rod... Marriage far predates the children of Israel. One can read texts describing marriage ceremonies in Egypt prior to Jacob and his family's arrival there. There are also texts extant from the peoples of Babylon. I believe there are texts that actually predate Abram in Ur, but they may only mention royal marriages. The oldest discussions of marriage ceremonies originate in Sumerian texts -- they wrote about everything! -- which would predate Babylon and Egypt. I can't put my fingers on it at the moment, but I'm pretty certain that this would be in excess of four millenia ago. In Him, Doc |
