AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 2:11 And after entering the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, after opening their treasure chests, they presented to Him gifts [fit for a king, gifts] of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. |
Bible Question: Did Mary and Joseph speak of the gifts given at birth by the Magi and if not how do we know what the gifts were. Could they be symbollic of something? |
Bible Answer: Blessings, prayon! "Gifts - Cp. Ps 72:10-11; Isa 60:6" (New Scofield Study Bible) "Gold symbolized royalty; frankincense was a fragrance; myrrh was the ointment of death. These gifts provided the financial resources for Mary and Joseph’s flight to Egypt." (Nelson NKJV Study Bible) "Stewardship, Giving In Worship—The Magi’s gifts expressed their respect for and joyous worship of the Christ child. Biblical faith calls for worshipers to come before the Lord with gifts that have real value for the worshiper. See 5:23-24, note; Mal 1:6-14, note." (Disciple's Study Bible) "gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These were gifts worthy of a king. The early church Fathers understood the gold to be symbolic of Christ’s deity, the frankincense of His purity, and the myrrh of His death (since it was used for embalming)." (The Ryrie's Study Bible) "gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The three gifts perhaps gave rise to the legend that there were three "wise men." But the Bible does not indicate the number of the magi, and they were almost certainly not kings. myrrh." ... (from Gen. 37:25) "Probably to be identified with labdanum, an aromatic gum (see Psalm 45:8; Prov. 7:17; Song 3:6; 5:13) exuded from the leaves of the cistus rose. Its oil was used in beauty treatments (see Esth. 2:12), and it was sometimes mixed with wine and drunk to relieve pain (see Mark 15:23). As a gift fit for a king, myrrh was brought to Jesus after His birth (Matt. 2:11) and applied to His body after His death (John 19:39-40)." (Zondervan NASB Study Bible) "gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gifts suitable for a king (cf. Is. 60:6). The fact that Gentiles would offer such worship had prophetic significance as well (Psalm 72:10)." (MacArthur NKJV Study Bible) Nolan |
