Bible Question:
Isaiah 61:3 Oaks of Righteousness? (Amp.) In Isaiah 61:3 it says To grant [consolation and joy] to those who mourn in Zion--to give them an ornament of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a heavy, burdened, and failing spirit--that they may be called oaks of righteousness [lofty, strong, and magnificent, distinguished for uprightness, justice, and right standing with God], the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. What does it mean by this? Does this have a hidden meaning and/or represent someting entirely different? Why out of all the other kinds of trees was the oak chosen? What makes it so special? |
Bible Answer: Greetings GatorGirl, Isaiah 61:3 "to strengthen those who mourn in Zion, by giving them a turban, instead of ashes, oil symbolizing joy, instead of mourning, a garment symbolizing praise, instead of discouragement. They will be called godly oaks, trees planted by the Lord to reveal his splendor." [The NET Bible (1)] Here is some commentary on this verse: "Or “oaks of righteousness.” Rather than referring to the character of the people, qdx may carry the nuance “vindication” here, suggesting that God’s restored people are a testimony to his justice. See v. 2, which alludes to the fact that God will take vengeance against the enemies of his people." (1) "61:1-3 PROCLAMATION, Anointing - When we faithfully proclaim the gospel, God anoints that proclamation. He fills it with power (Mic. 3:8; Luke 4:17-19; 1 Thess. 1:4-5). What God commands us to do, He enables us to do. God does not call the equipped. He equips the called. ... When we rest wholly on Him and are in obedience to His Word, He fills us with His presence and power. Compare Acts 4:31-33; 1 Cor. 2:1-5; 2 Tim. 4:17. .." (2) "61:3 oaks of righteousness. Contrast the oaks of 1:30." (3) "..Trees of righteousness “Trees approved” - Hebrews oaks of righteousness or truth; that is, such as by their flourishing condition should show that they were indeed “the scion of God’s planting, and the work of his hands;” under which images, in the preceding chapter, Isa_60:21, the true servants of God, in a highly improved state of the Church, were represented; that is, says Vitringa on that place, “commendable for the strength of their faith, their durability, and firmness.” (4) Blessings to you, Makarios (1) The NET Bible, http://www.bible.org/netbible/ (2) Disciple's Study Bible, New International Version, 1988, Holman Bible Publishers, A Cornerstone Bible, pg. 890 (3) The Zondervan NASB Study Bible, 1999, the Zondervan Corporation, Kenneth Barker, pg. 1041 (4) Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible |
