Bible Question: What is a parable and are they true stores or just made up to make a point |
Bible Answer: A parable is "an earthly story with heavenly meaning." It is to explain a point, or convey a truth, using a human illustration. The key thing to look for when reading the parable is the chief point of comparision, or Jesus' point, or the things compared in the parable. Try not to get too bogged down into the details, because they are only there to bolster the point, and not necessarily to be taken too seriously. To answer your question more directly, they are stories to prove a point. Take for example Jesus parable of the Lost Sheep in Matthew 15. The point is that the salvation of that one person is very important. However, you can examine details that teach truths from this,(like going the extra mile for a friend, which is a good thing) but they are not the chief point of comparision. Parables are often filled with meaning, but the chief point of comparision is the most important part. Hope my example wasn't too confusing. Peace of Christ be with you -Sheepy |
