Bible Note: You write: "You referred to 2 Tim 3:16. The scripture referred to is the Old Testament because there was no New Testament yet." Are you implying that the writings of Peter, Paul, John, Luke, etc. do not belong in the canon of the Bible? That they are not Scripture? 2 Peter 3:15-16 (ESV) And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, [16] as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the OTHER Scriptures. (Emphasis added.) "the other Scriptures."This is one of the most clear-cut statements in the Bible to affirm that the writings of Paul are Scripture. You write: "I think we need to keep in mind when questions of doctrine come up we should explain the doctrine of our denomination." I don't think so. If someone asks me to explain the doctrine of my denomination, then I would tell him what that is. Otherwise, if someone merely asks a question pertaining to doctrine or practice, then we ought to do our utmost to answer according to the Scriptures -- not according to our denomination. God forbid that my denomination should ever take the place of the Bible as my source of doctrine and practice. |
