Bible Answer: Matthew 11:8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. I think the point is that John was not living like a king or prince, but had denied himself all the worldly comforts and pleasures in exchange for the ultimate pleasure of God Himself. John was a prophet sent by God to prepare people to receive Jesus. He preached to the people about Hell and repentance, and about the Messiah who was coming to take away the sins of the world. When Jesus began His public ministry, John was there to introduce Jesus to the world: John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! |
