Bible Question: Despite being commanded to pursue the biblical example given by Jesus, its not often we hear the Fear of God in the hearts ofthe hearer. Why do you think so many shy away from doing that? |
Bible Answer: Dear Rilojay, Welcome to the forum! I saw a video the other day that showed some people labeling and packaging rubber snakes. The snakes came to them on a conveyor belt in boxes. Their job was to take the toy snakes out of the box, place a label on them, and put them into a bin. Some of their fellow workers decided to put a few real snakes in some of the boxes. It was humorous when the workers pulled a real snake out of a box instead of a rubber one. It would usually take a moment or so for them to realize it was a live snake. Startled, they would drop the live snake as quickly as possible. In philosophy we distinguish between what we see and what we perceive. We can see something and yet mistake it for something else. Perception is not simply a matter of seeing, but a matter of understanding what one is seeing. If we saw someone pointing a gun at us, we would fear for our lives. That is because we understand what a gun can do. We know guns sufficiently well to identify them and understand their potential. Fear is the reaction to what we perceive. On the other hand, a person who knew nothing of guns would not recognize one, nor know anything of their potential. In the absence of understanding, this person would have no fear. When people are misinformed about God and are misinformed about their own standing before God, there is no fear. Well meaning believers wander around saying, "God loves you!" The unbeliever says, "Great... What's not to love? I love me too." There is a failure to tell them the truth: that they are unholy people who will be judged by a perfectly holy God. To know God is to both love and fear Him. I encourage everyone to listen to Jonathan Edwards "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."
