Bible Question: what is eternal security |
Bible Answer: Dear Brenda, I must correct the previous answer you received on this topic. Eternal security is a doctrine often considered equivalent to what was known in previous times as "the perseverance of the saints" (see post #152574). At least the one thing they certainly have in common is the notion that a saved person may be assured of their salvation. Indeed, the primary objective of eternal security is to render assurance of the eternal disposition of a believers souls -- that they may have confidence in their election, and the completed work of Jesus Christ in their atonement. The biggest problem we have nowadays, though, is that eternal security is used to grant people a sense of assurance who might not deserve it. The idea that a person can be saved without showing any external evidence of the fact is alien to the Scriptures. While we cannot see the direct effects of salvation, the life of the believer always manifests itself in externally observable behavior. (See post #172547.) If there are no evidences of salvation in a person's life, that person should be very afraid. It is unfortunate that the tares do not know that they are tares; but that is due to their unwillingness to find their redemption in the Scriptures. The Word is quite explicit about the evidentiary fruit in the lives of believers. In Him, Doc |
