Bible Question: Why do Matthew and Luke attribute different parental grandfathers to Jesus? |
Bible Answer: Hello DaveW, Matthew's intent is to present Jesus as the rightful king of Israel. To do this requires family ties to David through the father's parentage. As step-father, Joseph had to be proved to be in the line. Luke's intent is to show Jesus' humanity--the son of man. Therefore, he needed to show the parentage of the mother. Because Jewish ancestry never mentions the mother, Luke gives Mary's male ancestors without mentioning her name. Steve |
