Subject: Why do they both include Shealtiel? |
Bible Note: I realize that one is the geneology of Joseph and the other is the geneology of Mary. What I don't understand is why both have Shealtiel and Zerubbabel in them. In Matthew it says that Jeconiah was Shealtiel's father. In Luke it says that Neri was his father. One interesting thing is this note: (Matthew 1:11) Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Babylon. So here's the only possibility I can think of: Shealtiel was born to Jeconiah, then something happened to Jeconiah as they were in captivity, and Neri adopted him. His son was Zerubbabel and Zerubbabel went on to have at least two sons- Rhesa (Luke) and Abuid (Matthew). This makes some sense since Luke counts Heli as Joseph's father, maybe he includes this other adoption. This is the best I can come up with. I would be interested to hear other thoughts. |
