Bible Question: What animal did God allow to speak to Baalam? |
Bible Answer: Greetings angelface, To elaborate a little more on Jesusman's answer: There are parallels between Balaam and his donkey. First, just as Baalam pushes his donkey onward until he is brought up short by God's angel, so Balak keeps pushing Balaam to curse Israel although God repeatedly tells him not to. Next just as God opens the donkey's mouth to speak God's true words to Balaam so God will open the Balaam's mouth to speak God's real blessing on Israel. Third, the donkey's dilemma mirrors that of Balaam. The donkey is caught between the angel of God with his drawn sword and Balaam's stick, Similarily, Balaam is caught between the immoveable word of God and Balak's urgings. The miracle is not the point of the story, the point is the humiliation of Balaam who is supposed to be a seer but cannot even see the angel of the Lord although a donkey can.
