AMPLIFIED 2015 | Numbers 18:1 So the LORD said to Aaron, "You and your sons and your father's household (family) with you shall bear the guilt in connection with the sanctuary [that is, through your service as priests you will atone for the offenses which the people unknowingly commit when brought into contact with the manifestations of God's presence]; and you and your sons with you shall bear the guilt in connection with your priesthood [that is, your own unintentional offenses]. |
Bible Question: why do you think the Lord gave aaron and his sons to bear the guilt in connection with the sanctuary? |
Bible Answer: Because in Num.3:9 the Lord instructed Moses to put Aaron and his sons in charge of the Levites and later in verse 41 he told Moses "and thou shalt take the Levites for me". This meant that God himself had chosen the Levite tribe as his preisthood and he had also chosen Aaron and his sons to be the heads of that preisthood. Now this according to verse 39 was 22,000. For the Lord to choose them to be the head of that many preists they had to have been extremely upright and righteous, therefore he would expect a great deal more from them than the other preists. It deals with levels. Think of a business set-up. You have workers, supervisors, managers, vice-presidents and the president/ceo. The higer you go on the chain the more authority each one has and at the same time they also have to be responsible for everyone under them. So putting Aaron and his sons in charge of the Levites meant that the Lord trusted them greatly therefore they had the greatest responsibility. I pray that this has helped answer your question.
