Subject: sold as slave or taught to keep cattle? |
Bible Note: In Strong's Concordance (based on the KJV), this verse is: "5 But he shall say (H559), I am no (H3808) prophet (H5030), I am an husbandman (H5647); for man (H120) taught me to keep (H7069) cattle (H7069) from my youth (H5271)." 'husbandman' - (H5647) abad (aw-bad) "A primitive root; to work (in any sense); by implication to serve, till, (causatively) enslave, etc.:— X be, keep in bondage, be bondmen, bond-service, compel, do, dress, ear, execute, and husbandman, keep, labour (-ing man), bring to pass, (cause to, make to) serve (-ing, self), (be, become) servant (-s), do (use) service, till (-er), transgress [from margin], (set a) work, be wrought, worshipper." 'keep' - (H7069) ganah (kaw-nah) "A primitive root; to erect, that is, create; by extension to procure, especially by purchase (causatively sell); by implication to own:—attain, buy (-er), teach to keep cattle, get, provoke to jealousy, possess (-or), purchase, recover, redeem, X surely, X verily." 'cattle' - (H7069) ganah (kaw-nah) "A primitive root; to erect, that is, create; by extension to procure, especially by purchase (causatively sell); by implication to own:—attain, buy (-er), teach to keep cattle, get, provoke to jealousy, possess (-or), purchase, recover, redeem, X surely, X verily." It is interesting that the Hebrew word 'ganah' (which clearly means 'sold' or 'to redeem') is translated as both 'cattle' and 'keep' in the KJV and NKJV, which is a 'leap' in translation in my opinion! The Hebrew words for 'cattle' and 'keep' are not found in this verse, and the rendering in modern translations such as the NASB and NIV have corrected this error. The NASB Exhaustive Concordance states it this way: "5 but he will say (H559), 'I am not a prophet (H5030); I am a tiller (H376-H5647) of the ground (H127), for a man (H120) sold (H7069) me as a slave in my youth (H5271).'" We can see here that the NASB updates the word 'husbandman' into "tiller" and correctly renders 'ganah' as "sold". The NKJV updates the word 'husbandman' in the KJV as "farmer". However, the NKJV has kept 'taught me to keep cattle from my youth' so as to 'not depart' from the tradition of the KJV; whereas the better or more 'correct' rendering of this verse (based on the Hebrew) is 'sold me as a slave in my youth.' So we can see here that at least in this verse, the NASB is more accurate than the NKJV. |
