Bible Question: Please explain Haggai 1:12 (Fear) |
Bible Answer: ary yare' yaw-ray' a primitive root; to fear; morally, to revere; caus. to frighten:--affright, be (make) afraid, dread(-ful), (put in) fear(-ful, -fully, -ing), (be had in) reverence(-end), X see, terrible (act, -ness, thing). The verse above this concludes a message calling the people to a new attitude toward God. Haggai 1:11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands. Today we would hear many preachers say God did not call the drought, but those that fear the Lord cringe when such a message is preached, because they know the balance of the Holy Spirit, to both Love the Lord and Fear the Lord. We Fear the Lord in reverential fear, but that does not make it anyless awesome of a fear. We still fall on our face before His holiness and tremble. He has shown us His Love by sending us His son and we enter into fellowship with Him and are friends, but woe to the man that takes that lightly and thinks that he can play the harlot with God. He will find that God still calls forth the drought to lead people to repentance if they forget God in prosperity. Fearing God is not a contradiction to Love. It is often said "But I do not want to fear my father, I want to have a love relationship with him." That is true, but if your earthly father was a good father, he could make your stomach turn somersaults if you got caught doing something you knew you were not supposed to be doing. This is because you knew your father loved you enough to discipline you. Hebrews 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? If more preachers preached the Fear of God as Paul did, there would be fewer backsliders and those that did backslide would be more miserable while they were doing so. The goodness of God leads men to repentance, but the fear of God is part of the goodness of God not something else. |
