AMPLIFIED 2015 | Jonah 4:2 He prayed to the LORD and said, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still in my country? That is why I ran to Tarshish, because I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and great in lovingkindness, and [when sinners turn to You] You revoke the [sentence of] disaster [against them]. Bible Question:
could you tell me why jonah refused to obey GOD'S wish though he was a believer and was near to god's presence |
Bible Answer: Greetings Chikoo, "Nahum" ... "states that Nineveh's sins included plotting evil against the Lord (Nah. 1:11), cruelty and plundering in war (Nah. 2:12-13; 3:1,19), prostitution and witchcraft (Nah. 3:4) and commercial exploitation (Nah. 3:16)." (1) So, for all these reasons, Jonah refused to let the blessing of the Lord come to Nineveh, so that Nineveh would come to repentance. Therefore, Jonah ran away from the Lord. But he realized that there was no other way than to obey the Lord, or he would meet his demise. So he went to Nineveh, and the entire city repented. However, this infuriated Jonah because the city took hold of and accepted the blessing that was given to them through the prophet Jonah (4:1-2). But the Lord again puts Jonah in his place, which shows that the Lord is sovereign and takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 33:11, 18:21-23).
