Bible Question:
Matthew 16:4 This is the second time in Matthew that Jesus sais that there will be no signs for this wicked generation except for the one of Jonah. Can someone explain to me what the sign of Jonah is? |
Bible Answer: The sign of Jonah is: 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of the fish. "Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights" (Jonah 1:17). After being told by Christ of the unpardonable sin (Matthew 12:32), the religious leaders (scribes and Pharisees) asked Christ for a sign (Matthew 12:38). Christ made it clear that the evil and adulterous generation would receive only one sign, the sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:39). "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the fish's belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Matthew 12:40). By this Christ indicated how long he would spend in the grave before being raised from the dead. |
