Bible Question:  AMOS 5:4-5 This is what the Lord says to
the house of Israel."Seek me and live,do
not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal,do
not journey to Beersheba"

What is the message? Can anyone enlighten
me!

With Love in Christ

FytRobert

Bible Answer:  Greetings FytRobert,

Amos 5:4 ¶ For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel, "Seek Me that you may live.
Amos 5:5 "But do not resort to Bethel And do not come to Gilgal, Nor cross over to Beersheba; For Gilgal will certainly go into captivity And Bethel will come to trouble.

Here is a bit of commentary on this verse..

"5:4 Seek. See vv. 6,14. live. If they would seek the Lord, they (or at least a remnant, v.15) could yet escape the violent death anticipated in Amos's lament."

"5:5 Bethel ... Gilgal. See note on 4:4. Beersheba. Located in the south of Judah, it also had evidently become a place of pilgrimage and idolatry (cf. 8:14). All shrines where the worship of God was abused would be destroyed." (1)

"5:4-5 Seek the Lord, but not at the places of worship, Bethel and Gilgal, which will be destroyed, nor even at Beersheba in southern Judah." (2)

"5:4-6 GOD, Savior- Salvation comes when we personally seek to meet the living God, not when we regularly and routinely carry out meaningless acts of worship. God, the Savior, issues a personal call to life in Him." (3)

"Amos 5:4 - Seek ye me, and ye shall live--literally, "Seek . . . Me, and live." The second imperative expresses the certainty of "life" (escape from judgment) resulting from obedience to the precept in the first imperative. If they perish, it is their own fault; God would forgive, if they would repent (Isa_55:3, Isa_55:6)." (4)

Blessings to you,

Makarios
