Subject: Women being called 'cows'? |
Bible Note: Greetings prayon! :) To add some further documentary here, God's indictment against Israel was directed against the 'cows of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria'. Bashan was a fertile region east of the Jordan and north of Gilead. The cattle of Bashan were noted for being well fed (cf. Ezek. 39:18). Amos used this figure of speech to describe the pampered, pleasure-loving women of Samaria who had more than they needed yet coveted more (Amos 4:1; Isaiah 3:16-24; 32:9-13). These women expected their husbands to provide for their luxurious style of living. Although the husbands are their 'masters', they were really their wives' servants. To get the money required, they had to crush the poor. Domineering women thus were fueling oppression, and the 'poor' were being exploited and taken advantage of. Are there examples of the exploitation of the poor today? If so, which groups are oppressing them? Which group or who do we classify as being "poor"? This is pretty much the study that I went through after reading this verse. I realize that all the women on the Forum may be 'after me' now! :) Oh well, it a good study anyways.. :) Take care! Nolan |
