Bible Question: is there any difference between tithes and first fruits |
Bible Answer: Greetings olaoluwa, DEFINITIONS: FIRST-FRUITS, n. 1. The fruit or produce first matured and collected in any season. Of these the Jews made an oblation to God, as an acknowledgment of his sovereign dominion. 2. The first profits of any thing. In the church of England, the profits of every spiritual benefice for the first year. 3. The first or earliest effect of any thing, in a good or bad sense; as the first-fruits of grace in the heart, or the first-fruits of vice. TITHE, n. The tenth part of any thing; but appropriately, the tenth part of the increase annually arising from the profits of land and stock, allotted to the clergy for their support. Tithes are personal, predial, or mixed; personal, when accruing from labor, art, trade and navigation; predial, when issuing from the earth, as hay, wood and fruit; and mixed, when accruing from beasts, which are fed from the ground. Example 1: A farmer: First-fruit: When the first apples mature on the trees. Tithe: One tenth of the harvest for that season. Example 2: A worker: First-fruit: Their first paycheck for that year. Tithe: One tenth of all their earnings for the year. These are just simple examples, the older Levitical Laws were much more complicated. Frist-fruit appears to deal more with what the ground brings forth. First-fruits and tithes were brought to the House of the Lord for the Levites so they would not be burdened with daily chores but could then devote all their time in their service to the Lord. The Levites did not receive any "land or real estate" inheretance in the Promised Land as the other tribes did. Their inheretance was The House of the Lord and to serve Him. SCRIPTURE: Tithes: Lev 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD. Lev 27:31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. Lev 27:32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD. Lev 27:33 He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed. First-fruits: Deu 26:2 That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name there. Hope this helps. It is a fasinating study which gets quite involved. Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. compudex |
